Cedar Corner Development is a 9,000 sq ft commercial building that has been designed and constructed using the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Process. This will be the only LEED constructed building to house a restaurant. The Project Manager Warren Rudd took interested people on a tour of the building and discussed the sustainable design and environmental building materials and practices that have created this unique and very attractive building. 98% used/salvaged wood used in structure
air source heat pump

rain water collection for toilet use
dual flush toilets
grey water heat recovery
heat recovery ventilator
40% flyash used in concrete
plumbed & wired for future solar power and hot water

shielded electricity cables
water filter systems
smart wiring
cast iron drain pipes
protection of building land and trees
use of adhesives, sealants, paints, etc. that do not contain harmful chemicals

Posts and beams for Cedar Corner were originally milled in 1881 for the Alert Bay Cannery. Windows throughout the building are metal with a thermal break. Low E argon windows are used. The floor boards of the second story are 3 inch double tongue and groove and open to the first floor.

First Floor Interior - Cedar Corner July 2005

The Photos below were taken in 2004 GoTofino toured Cedar Corner.

The front door of Cedar Corner opens onto the main street of Tofino, Campbell Street.

The second floor open ceiling design is dramatic and perfect for the planned restaurant.

The first floor ceiling beams and the bottom flooring of the second floor.

The first floor hardwood flooring will be as beautiful as the ceiling once they are finished.

GFX heat recovery of grey water.

Solderless pipes crimped together.

Rain water gathered for toilet use.

Shielded wire is used to reduce the electro-magnetic fields (EMF). Panels are away from populated areas.

Two apartments are available for people working in the restaurants or shops.

Each apartment is equipped with a loft that increases the overall useable space.

The apartments have lots of window area and south facing decks.

It was a great spring day when we toured Cedar Corner, located in downtown Tofino. This photo taken from the second story deck that will be part of the restaurant.
